co-founders of sublife & resident djs at databass & substance, mok & rusta have been friends for over 17 years. originally from south east england they both somehow ended up in los angeles & slowly began making an impact on the local scene. having played residencies on a couple of different radio stations, they decided to set up databass – a weekly d&b internet broadcast on groovetech.com featuring live djs sets & interviews that were then archived on the site. “when databass first started we would always play the first hour ourselves then get a guest to do the 2nd hour & before long we had some of the best drum & bass djs coming thru the show on a regular basis. gradually we stopped playing on the show so regularly to concentrate more on the production side of the things. at the same time we were going out to a lot of d&b events, playing at different parties & we felt there was room for us to do an event ourselves” & the now legendary databass sessions was born. since then sublife has been throwing some of the best drum & bass parties in la & continues to push new boundaries with its production & line-ups. aside from djing mok & rusta are extremely focused on producing their own music… “we’ve been making tunes with computers since we were 19 & before that we were in a band together. having slowly built up our studio over the last ten years we are now ready to unleash some of our stuff on the public”…. check out samples of their tracks in the dubplate section. their latest project is setting up sublife studios – a state of the art digital recording facility where they make their own music as well as helping other artists develop their sound. “running a studio like this is a full time job & we have been focusing our energy on getting this new business off the ground, so we have put some events on hold for the time being. our main goals over the next year is to establish sublife studios as one of the top studios to record your demo, band, dj mix or vocals, continue to improve the site with new features, launch our new label, concentrate harder on our own music, build up our production company & continue to bring la quality events.”
